Happy belated Earth Day, and happy almost one year anniversary of The Sweaty Penguin! Earth Day is a special holiday for many reasons, one of which being that it is organized by an NGO, or nongovernmental organization. And there are an estimated 10 million NGOs around the world working on a range of causes, with a prime one being climate change. However, on top of a long list of documented successes, when we look at many NGOs’ strategic decision making, accountability, and fundraising, there are a lot of questions about if environmental NGOs are actually living up to their full potential. Today, we discuss how NGOs create impact, discuss a few of these challenges, and contemplate how NGOs might be able to improve. With special guest Dr. Cristina Balboa: Associate Professor in the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs at Baruch College.
The Sweaty Penguin is presented by Peril and Promise: a public media initiative from PBS flagship station The WNET Group in New York, reporting on the issues and solutions around climate change. You can learn more at pbs.org/perilandpromise.
